In many ways, Mike Tierney is the epitome of a Jackson Hole artist. Arriving in the mid-90’s, Tierney made his mark on the mountain as a hard-charging athlete with a rebellious streak and a disdain for boundaries, physical and otherwise. His artistic style injects an urban dose of graffiti and stencil work into the mountains and landscapes of his beloved Wyoming. In the process, Tierney has re-invigorated a very tired and oftentimes cliché genre of landscape painting for a new generation.
It’s no wonder Mike’s piece entitled "The Wildest Mountain Alive” was selected as the official artwork commemorating Jackson Hole Mountain Resort's 50th Anniversary. Once the resort made their selection, they invited Asymbol to collaborate on a series of limited-edition prints of "The Wildest Mountain Alive" as well as a show of Tierney original paintings during the 50th Anniversary season.
About the selection process:
In Spring 2015, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort asked six local artists to create artwork to be considered as the official artwork of the 50th Anniversary. The creative brief asked the artists to consider several factors when creating their pieces. Here is an excerpt from the brief. "The Artwork will commemorate Jackson Hole Mountain Resort's 50th Anniversary, and communicate the legacy of adventure, which continues to challenge those who come to explore and experience all the mountain has to offer." Mike nailed it!
